Six schools within District 10 met at Utah’s first dental school, Roseman University of Health Sciences. Schools participating in the meeting included the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH), Midwestern University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), University of Washington, Oregon Health Sciences University, and Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine. The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) chapters met for a two-day meeting held on Februray 4-5, 2012.

Past ADA First Vice President, Dr. A.J. Smith, spoke to ASDA leaders about organized dentistry and controversial issues such as mid-level providers. Additionally, representatives from each chapter presented their activities, membership, advocacy and showcased videos produced by their schools.

Each school discussed the strengths and weaknesses of their chapter. Collaborations between schools were shown to be possible and ideas sparked from discussing events.

The meeting also included Annual Session updates and the goals of the district. ASDA leaders ended their night by dining at Tucano’s Brazillian Grill. The next day, they squeezed in some fun by skiing and snowboarding at nearby resorts. Before heading back home, leaders came up with ideas and events. They are ready to kick off 2012 in the right direction!

The report also includes interesting facts about employment for Dental and Nursing professionals. Twelve hundred Dentists and 16,900 Registered Nurses are employed in Nevada alone. Projections for Registered Nurses and Dentists’ job openings per year are 690 and 35 respectively. Dentists are paid $166,400 on an average per year and Registered Nurses make an average of $75,150.

The College of Nursing students from the Class of 2013, Henderson Campus, attended the Legislative Committee on Health for the Nevada Legislature on Valentine’s Day at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in Las Vegas. The students observed how evidence based practice influences the creation of health policy for the state. The meeting was teleconferenced with Carson City where individuals from Northern Nevada could participate as well.

Polyniak was nominated for the award by the College of Pharmacy’s Introductory Experience Coordinator Dr. Paul Oesterman based on feedback from  preceptors overseeing her experiential learning at clinical training sites. “Jennifer has consistently demonstrated excellent communication skills and compassion for patients,” said Oesterman.

Selected by Pharmacy Today, an official publication of the APhA, the award recognizes student pharmacists who have gone above and beyond to help patients understand why they take their medications and how to take them effectively. They also demonstrate superior communication skills that result in optimized medication regimes, improvement in patients’ physical and emotional well-being and even lives saved in clinics, hospitals and community pharmacies.

This year’s gala is themed “In the Year of the Dragon,” evoking the ambition and passion associated with the fifth and mightiest position of the Chinese Zodiac. Bringing the theme to life, the ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas will be adorned with traditional Year of the Dragon décor that will be complemented with music and performances to create an atmosphere befitting the greatest of Chinese holiday celebrations.

The soiree begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception featuring fine wines and hors d’ouerves. Following, a specially created dinner will feature a variety Asian-fusion cuisine. Nielson and Steinberg will receive their awards during the evening’s program.

Pharmacy students from Roseman University joined University of Utah pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy professionals at Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill.

Student pharmacists from Roseman University’s South Jordan campus joined other student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacists at the Utah State Capitol for the 2012 Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill on January 31.

The annual event is a coordinated effort between Utah’s two Colleges of Pharmacy (University of Utah and Roseman University), the Utah Pharmacists Association (UPhA) and Utah Society of Health-System Pharmacists (USHP).

The purpose of Pharmacy Day at the Utah Legislature is to educate legislators, staff, lobbyists and the public about what pharmacists do and their value in the community. Students meet with their legislators to discuss pharmacy and health care issues, and also provide legislators and their staff with free health screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol.

Roseman pharmacy students prepared poster displays with information on medication dosing, controlled substance abuse, drug shortages, safe medication disposal, immunizations, a pharmacists’ role in dispensing medication, and more. They also collected unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications for safe disposal.

Rep. Evan Vickers (R-Cedar City) introduced the students in the House, and Sen. Pat Jones (D-Salt Lake City) presented the students to the Senate. Gov. Gary Herbert also presented an official declaration naming January 31 as Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill.

Roseman students Que-Chau Ngo and Youjin Seo spent the afternoon playing BINGO and painting residents’ fingernails. It was the first time students have volunteered at The Wentworth at Draper.

“We were looking for ways to do volunteer work, and we hope to be able to come back at least once a month,” said Que-Chau. Staff members at Wentworth said residents enjoy volunteers like the Roseman NCPA students because they keep them company and have fun doing activities and playing games.

In 2010 the AAMC received grant funding from the Human Resources and Services Administration for this initiative, which seeks to incorporate curriculum for medical school students about oral health and its impact on overall health. This curriculum will provide a foundation for a more comprehensive, coordinated care approach between medical and oral health practitioners.

The winning submissions, including Dr. DeSchepper’s, come with a $2,000 development award and travel support to attend a one-day training workshop on Educational Scholarship in Washington, D.C.

Dr. DeSchepper’s content, along with submissions from 55 others selected for the award, will be peer-reviewed and made available via MedEdPORTAL, and will serve as a model Oral Health in Medicine curriculum. Congratulations, Dr. DeSchepper!

Initially, the clinic will only provide care in emergency dental situations. Services offered include examinations, dental X-rays, extractions, preventive services, root canals, and dental fillings. College of Dental Medicine faculty members will staff the clinic until students in Roseman’s inaugural Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) class are prepared to begin clinical work in 2013.

“The Emergency Services Clinic is a great first step toward enhancing the capacity of our profession to provide affordable dental care in Utah,” said Brian Lacey, Director of Clinical Operations at Roseman University College of Dental Medicine. “In the future we will be able to offer expanded care options, including preventive and comprehensive treatment options through Clinical Practice Teams, when our student dentists enter the clinical phase of their education in 2013.”

The schedule for the Emergency Services Clinic is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will be closed on weekends and any holidays when Roseman University is closed. Fees for the services will be approximately 66 percent less than the usual and customary fees in the practicing community. The clinic will serve adults and school-age children.

“Part of our mission at Roseman University College of Dental Medicine is to contribute to the existing efforts of Utah dental professionals to offer access to affordable dental care in our community,” said Dr. Leslie Karns, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Patient Care at Roseman. “The emergency clinic will be another option for patients with emergency dental situations who cannot afford traditional dental care.”

Walk-ins will be accepted if time and space are available, but patients are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance. The clinic is located at Roseman University’s Utah campus in the brand new College of Dental Medicine building at 10894 S. River Front Parkway in South Jordan.
