Roseman Students Participate in Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill

Pharmacy students from Roseman University joined University of Utah pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy professionals at Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill.

Student pharmacists from Roseman University’s South Jordan campus joined other student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacists at the Utah State Capitol for the 2012 Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill on January 31.

The annual event is a coordinated effort between Utah’s two Colleges of Pharmacy (University of Utah and Roseman University), the Utah Pharmacists Association (UPhA) and Utah Society of Health-System Pharmacists (USHP).

The purpose of Pharmacy Day at the Utah Legislature is to educate legislators, staff, lobbyists and the public about what pharmacists do and their value in the community. Students meet with their legislators to discuss pharmacy and health care issues, and also provide legislators and their staff with free health screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol.

Roseman pharmacy students prepared poster displays with information on medication dosing, controlled substance abuse, drug shortages, safe medication disposal, immunizations, a pharmacists’ role in dispensing medication, and more. They also collected unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications for safe disposal.

Rep. Evan Vickers (R-Cedar City) introduced the students in the House, and Sen. Pat Jones (D-Salt Lake City) presented the students to the Senate. Gov. Gary Herbert also presented an official declaration naming January 31 as Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill.

Roseman students prepared and presented posters about various health, pharmacy, and drug-related topics at Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill.

Roseman NCPA Students Volunteer with the Elderly

Pharmacy students from the Roseman University South Jordan chapter of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) volunteered with the residents of The Wentworth at Draper Assisted Living Community on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Roseman students Que-Chau Ngo and Youjin Seo spent the afternoon playing BINGO and painting residents’ fingernails. It was the first time students have volunteered at The Wentworth at Draper.

“We were looking for ways to do volunteer work, and we hope to be able to come back at least once a month,” said Que-Chau. Staff members at Wentworth said residents enjoy volunteers like the Roseman NCPA students because they keep them company and have fun doing activities and playing games.

Roseman College of Dental Medicine Professor Honored with AAMC Grant

Dr. Edward DeSchepper, professor at Roseman University College of Dental Medicine in South Jordan, Utah, was recently awarded a grant from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) for his submission of an Oral Health in Medicine model curriculum.

In 2010 the AAMC received grant funding from the Human Resources and Services Administration for this initiative, which seeks to incorporate curriculum for medical school students about oral health and its impact on overall health. This curriculum will provide a foundation for a more comprehensive, coordinated care approach between medical and oral health practitioners.

The winning submissions, including Dr. DeSchepper’s, come with a $2,000 development award and travel support to attend a one-day training workshop on Educational Scholarship in Washington, D.C.

Dr. DeSchepper’s content, along with submissions from 55 others selected for the award, will be peer-reviewed and made available via MedEdPORTAL, and will serve as a model Oral Health in Medicine curriculum. Congratulations, Dr. DeSchepper!

Roseman Student Pharmacist Hailed for Spotting Error

In the latest issue of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Medication Safety Alert! newsletter, the organization recognized third-year student pharmacist Sal Rivas for identifying and alerting them about a drug manufacturer’s website dosing error that could have resulted in parents inadvertently administering 10 times more than the recommended dosage of phenylephrine HCI 0.125% for children 2- to 6-years-old. The drug in question was a decongestant nose drop. His vigilance allowed the ISMP to contact the manufacturer who promptly corrected the error on the same day. Congratulations to Sal for using his knowledge and problem-solving skills to help the public avoid a potentially dangerous mistake.

Roseman Opens Emergency Dental Clinic in Utah

Roseman University’s College of Dental Medicine opened an Emergency Dental Services Clinic at the campus in South Jordan, Utah.

Initially, the clinic will only provide care in emergency dental situations. Services offered include examinations, dental X-rays, extractions, preventive services, root canals, and dental fillings. College of Dental Medicine faculty members will staff the clinic until students in Roseman’s inaugural Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) class are prepared to begin clinical work in 2013.

The Emergency Services Clinic is a great first step toward enhancing the capacity of our profession to provide affordable dental care in Utah,” said Brian Lacey, Director of Clinical Operations at Roseman University College of Dental Medicine. “In the future we will be able to offer expanded care options, including preventive and comprehensive treatment options through Clinical Practice Teams, when our student dentists enter the clinical phase of their education in 2013.”

The schedule for the Emergency Services Clinic is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will be closed on weekends and any holidays when Roseman University is closed. Fees for the services will be approximately 66 percent less than the usual and customary fees in the practicing community. The clinic will serve adults and school-age children.

“Part of our mission at Roseman University College of Dental Medicine is to contribute to the existing efforts of Utah dental professionals to offer access to affordable dental care in our community,” said Dr. Leslie Karns, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Patient Care at Roseman. “The emergency clinic will be another option for patients with emergency dental situations who cannot afford traditional dental care.”

Walk-ins will be accepted if time and space are available, but patients are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance. The clinic is located at Roseman University’s Utah campus in the brand new College of Dental Medicine building at 10894 S. River Front Parkway in South Jordan. For more information or to become a patient at the College of Dental Medicine Emergency Services Clinic, call 801-878-1200, email EmergencyDentalCare@roseman.edu, or visit www.rosemandental.com.

Roseman University South Jordan students send over 200 Holiday Mail for Heroes cards

Student from Roseman University in South Jordan sent over 200 cards to service members, veterans, and their families through the American Red Cross’ Holiday Mail for Heroes program.

The goal of Holiday Mail for Heroes is for every service member, whether they are on active duty, injured, or a veteran, to receive a holiday card.

“I heard about this program three years ago and thought it sounded wonderful,” said Rebecca Petersen, a second-year pharmacy student from Roseman University’s College of Pharmacy in South Jordan, Utah.

Petersen, who has family members and friends who are in the military, knows what a difference a simple card can make for someone who is far from home during the holiday season. “So many soldiers don’t have family or friends to write to, and that can get really discouraging around the holidays,” she said.

In 2010, the first-year pharmacy class from Roseman University’s South Jordan campus filled out several cards, but this year Petersen was able to organize the first-year and second-year pharmacy students, as well as faculty, staff, and students from the College of Dental Medicine and the College of Nursing to participate.

The drop box was anonymous, and Petersen left 110 cards for people to fill out and place in the box, but that was not nearly enough. When she picked up the final letters, there were 230 inside, including cards people purchased and brought from home.

“I definitely consider this a success for the whole school because I know most of the students, faculty, and staff must have written at least one card to get that many,” said Petersen. “I’m so proud of our school and faculty for participating in this program, and I’m so excited for the troops to get our cards!”

Holiday Mail for Heroes is in its fifth year, and is sponsored by the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes. For more information, you can visit redcross.org/holidaymail.
